Send a Letter to the Editor

Alaskans are lucky; with our small population, and even fewer people open to writing a letter to the editor, a large portion of the letters sent are published.  We are pleased that you have taken the time to check this page out and hope you will write a letter yourself!

All letters to the editor must meet the paper’s guidelines to be considered for publication, but if you adhere to these rules your letter should be publishable in any newspaper in Alaska:
    • 175 words maximum (make every word count!)
    • Provide your name, mailing addresses and telephone (usually they are used by the editor for verification and are not published ~ so don’t be surprised if you get a call from the paper after you send in the letter, if you don’t want your name or contact information published make sure you emphasize this outside the body of the letter)
    • Relate your letter to a recent story in the paper if possible
    • Present solutions to the problem you’re discussing
    • Double-space
    • Spell check
    • No profane language or libelous statements
    • If you are sending letters to more than one paper, send to each one individually, as they often won’t publish obviously “broadcast” letters or ones sent to their competitors.
    • Send letters pertaining to an election or ballot measure more than 4 business days before the election.

Newspapers reserve the right to edit all submissions and will do so for clarity, grammar and taste, but they would often rather select well-written and grammatically correct letters, so make it easy to publish yours.  They often will only publish one letter per writer per month.  Below are links so you may send your letter electronically, this will make it easier for the newspapers too, as they won’t have to re-type your letter.

If you are a member of ProsperityAlaska.org and one of your letters gets published or replied to (positively or negatively), let us know so we may post it on our Facebook page and maybe even our website!
